15 Practices to Help you live a
1. Put a glass of water on your bedside table.
It’s great to have it there in case you get thirsty in the middle of the night and need a drink – waking up to go to the fridge can arouse your nervous system and consequently mess around with your sleep pattern, so having easy access to water is ideal. It’s also great because you should be drinking water immediately upon waking up – after all, your body has gone through hours of sleep and is likely very dehydrated!
2. Look at your planner within the first 40 minutes of waking up.
It’s easy to get sidetracked and have our time consumed with social media. Make sure you look at your planner first so that you can plan and organise your day accordingly. Then, whenever you have the chance, catch up with the world!
3. Affirmations and Brushing Teeth.
This is the perfect opportunity for you to spoil yourself with some positive affirmations! Conjure some positive and encouraging words about yourself and repeat them in your head as you brush your teeth. You’ll be looking in the mirror, so don’t forget to smile!
4. Laundry Tag.
Let’s all be honest – we often let clothes pile up and sometimes our bedrooms aren’t perfectly neat. Instead of letting everything pile up, take a heap of clothes that nee to be washed to the laundry each time you leave your room!
5. Go for a walk.
Whether it’s during your lunch break or even on your toilet break, go for a quick 5-10 minute walk and just breathe. Acknowledge your surroundings and look for the positives! Reflect on the fact that you are here, living life. You’ll immediately feel better as nature and greenery soothes the eyes!
6. Take your supplements!
Only if you need to, though. If you’ve been prescribed vitamins or supplements, don’t be on-off with them. There should definitely be no such thing as a love/hate relationship with these guys. Your health is your priority, and if the doctor says take 1 per day after your morning snack, then you do exactly that.
7. Relax in your own Hot Springs!
If you have a bath, utilize it at least once per week. Come on. We all have at least one hour in the week where we are doing nothing. Schedule in that time to take a bath with some Epsom salts and a few drops of lavender essential oil. I usually do this on days when I play Indoor Soccer (or my heavy weights day) because I get quite sore! It’s the perfect way to relax and detoxify your body at the same time.
8. Write things down!
When you have an idea pop in your head, write it down! Otherwise, it is reallllly likely that you will forget it. Seriously, that could have been a million-dollar thought, and now it’s gone *poof* into thin air! Your brain is flooded with thoughts, and unless you place emphasis on a certain thought, you will miss the chance of your brain storing that thought in your long term memory (LTM). Your brain is literally the embodiment of ‘ain’t nobody got time for that’ when it comes to you thinking of 5 amazing ideas at the same time. Save yourself the hassle and just write down your thoughts and ideas!
9. Store your memories.
Keep your movie tickets. Keep your travel pictures, and even some cute sticky notes! Store your memories in a nice album and right into a box – you’ll thank yourself in 10 years when you reminisce on what a beautiful life you have had so far!
10. Don’t sweat it at the little things, and learn to bite your tongue.
Sometimes we can get frustrated or angry really quickly, and we forget to put ourselves in the other person’s shoes. If someone apologizes all the while they have done something really irritating (for example, you’ve gone all the way to meet up in the city, and they’ve cancelled all of a sudden), just forgive them and let them know it’s fine (nothing wrong with a solo coffee date)! Bite your tongue, take a breath, and acknowledge it’s not the end of the world. Remember that people aren’t out to make your life a living hell – life just happens. Treat them the same way that you would like to be treated.
11. Pick your battles.
There will be so many times where people challenge you and try to enter this alpha-beta relationship with you. Pick your battles though – it’s never fun to be the one who always has their ego jump right out when a provocation is tickled. Let it be! You’ll know when to stand up; and oh boy, it will be worth it!
12. Admit when you’re wrong.
There’s nothing wrong with being wrong! It is, however, an admirable trait to have when you can acknowledge these things about yourself. It’s all about being humble and raw.
13. Find time for meditation every single day.
Heaps of successful people (such as Tony Robins and Mimi Ikonn) swear by daily meditation. Give yourself 10-15 minutes where you simply switch-off. Your phone might be exploding with emails or calls, but just switch it to flight-mode and focus on your breath. Listen to some calming music while you meditate, and just relax. The key to meditation is to just BE – don’t think of what you did yesterday or are planning to do tomorrow. Simple. Just. Be. Just exist. Just sit there and learn to be OK to sit in the silence. Feel the energy of gratitude take over your body!
14. Trust your gut.
Your intuition is in line with your inner wisdom. Listen to your gut when it is telling you something! “Trust your gut” when making some important decisions!
15. Listen to Audiobooks and Podcasts while driving.
This is the single most productive thing to do while you drive. Of course you can listen to your favourite tracks, but sometimes when you’re stuck in traffic, listening to an Audiobook or podcast can conjure up some quality creativity in you. I used Audible and the Podcasts app on my iPhone. There’s no place you can’t learn, seriously! *Car Engine Noise*
